I had an excellent night on Monday at the performance of In The Heights at Broadway At Music Circus Wells Fargo Pavilion! Lin-Manuel Miranda’s (well known for his work in Moana and Mary Poppins Returns) lyrics and music electrify the stage with Latin beats, pop, and hip hop. The rhythmic, witty, and humorous prose carries a deep message of socio-economic issues in the barrio of New York. The audience witnesses first hand what it looks like to strive and persevere as immigrants and as first-generation Americans.
As a first-generation Mexican American, I understand the parental sacrifices and benevolent pressures received from loved ones who believe in your potential. I understand not fitting in with the college crowd and depending on a scholarship to be able to finish school. I understand feeling like I'm failing an entire community if I don't excel. All this is conveyed in this production from the perspective of a Latin American culture centered in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York.
The story is set in a period right before the gentrification of the neighborhood. The socioeconomic changes in the neighborhood convince the local residents to stop dwelling on how their neighborhood once functioned, stop dwelling on the nostalgia of the land they came from, stop dwelling on what could have been had they stayed in their home country . . . and focus on the blessings of the now and hopes for tomorrow. The audience witnesses an entire community being released from the shackles of poverty and arriving home . . . all without leaving Washington Heights. This production is a must-see! Warning, you may leave the theater dancing or want to head to the club afterward to move to some Latin beats.
Is the show kid-friendly? It is a pretty long show so I would recommend it for at least 8-year-olds and older. Also keep in mind that there is some sexuality, a bit of adult language, and scenes of drinking/clubbing in this show.
The show is about 2 hours long plus a 20-minute intermission. Chairs are comfortable but rows are a little tight. The air conditioner is pretty cool, so consider bringing a sweater. There are parking meters nearby or use SacPark to find parking ahead of time. Plus snacks are available for purchase before the show and during intermission.
Enjoy dinner before the show with a 10% discount at participating restaurants.
