The Dinosaur Hike

Dave Moore Nature Area

Just because school is back in session, it doesn't mean Summer is over. One of our favorite ways to beat the heat is a quick trip to the American River. Although there are many routes that will lead you to the American River, our absolute favorite is the Dave Moore Nature Trail in Lotus, more lovingly known as, "The Dino Hike".

Hidden along this 1 mile, mostly flat loop, are all sorts of dinosaurs which children, and kids at heart, can find and re-hide along the trail. This is the perfect hike for little ones who are new to hiking or tire out quickly. This prehistoric scavenger hunt will delight all ages with the added bonus of exercise, sunshine and fresh air. If you are lucky there may be some juicy blackberries awaiting you upon the vines that line the trail.

A half mile in you will come upon the South Fork of the American River. There is a nice sandy area perfect for creating sand sculptures, sun bathing and picnicing. We typically backpack in a blanket, lunch, and sand toys and enjoy our afternoons building sand castles and splashing in the water.

A few helpful tips:

1. There is only 1 bathroom, located at the trail head

2. Children should always wear a life jacket while swimming

3. Watch out for poison oak, leaves of 3, let it be

4. No glass is allowed in the water

5. Leave no trace, let's keep nature beautiful

6. Parking is free

7. Unplug and enjoy this hidden gem and time with your family
